Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc., honored to be awarded PATH contract for 340 new subway cars that will be proudly made in the USA
(Yonkers, New York) Yoshinori Kanehana, President of Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. (KRC), today stated that, on behalf of the hundreds of Kawasaki employees throughout the United States, the company is deeply honored to be awarded the Port Authority Trans-Hudson Corporation (PATH) contract to build 340 new PA-5 series subway cars that will serve the New York and New Jersey mass transit riding public for decades to come.
“These new rail cars will follow a Kawasaki tradition of being built on time, on budget and to the exacting specifications of a client who serves tens of thousands of commuters everyday. With our manufacturing facility being in Yonkers, New York, a significant portion of the work for these rail cars will be done by Kawasaki employees who are New York and New Jersey residents. Furthermore, our award will further strengthen the economic competitiveness of the region” Mr. Kanehana stated.
“We recognize that this PATH award reflects confidence in the quality of our product, our understanding of the critical role we play in moving people to and from their place of work and the need for rolling stock that is well designed, easy to maintain and able to withstand hundreds of thousands of miles of use with minimal maintenance. This award means we continue to be welcomed as part of the PATH team that is keeping the New York and New Jersey area on track and on time. We are genuinely proud to be part of that effort,” Mr. Kanehana continued.
Kawasaki has a reputation of delivering high quality, reliable and technically superior rail cars around the world and in North America including New York City Transit, PATH and Long Island Railroad. Their recognized achievements in the rail car industry are many, and include the pioneering of the famed Shinkansen "Bullet" trains that set worldwide speed records.
For several decades, KRC has operated its corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility in Yonkers, New York. Coincidentally, it is where their U.S. rail transit business began with the inaugural order of 95 subway cars for the PATH system. The Yonkers plant is equipped for complete fabrication, manufacturing, assembly, rehabilitation and function testing of all types of passenger rail cars. The facility was the first American rail car manufacturer to achieve the International Standards Organization ISO9002 certification in August 1994, a rigorous and demanding criteria for manufacturing performance. KRC successfully completed its upgrade certification to the ISO9001:2000 standard in October 2003.
Foreseeing the expanding need for rail transit in North America, Kawasaki constructed a state-of-the-art rail car manufacturing plant in Lincoln, Nebraska and had a Grand Opening in April of 2002. The plant was designed and constructed to accommodate all of the needs and requirements for rail car construction. This U.S. addition compliments the Yonkers facilities and allows Kawasaki to be more responsive to the increasing demand for rail transit cars, and to supply quality and reliable American-made products.
