THE LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD'S LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH KAWASAKI
resulted in the purchase of 134 new bi-level cars, which replaced
1950s vintage equipment. Passengers now enjoy a smooth, quiet
ride, sitting two abreast in ergonomic, side cantilevered seats
that offer more leg room and luggage/storage area. Focus groups
allowed passengers to select the seats and color schemes. Kawasaki
worked with LIRR to incorporate additional features that appeal
to its riders.
The new bi-levels comfortably
accommodate 60 additional passengers on the upper levels. The
LIRR delivery includes C-cars (cab cars) equipped with an engineman's
compartment for push-pull operation and a restroom, T/T-cars
(trailer cars with restrooms), and T-cars (trailer cars). Each
car provides ample room for two wheelchairs.
Kawasaki worked with the LIRR
as a team, in manufacturing the cars and after the delivery.
Issues after the sale were treated with the same prompt attention
and innovative thinking, to reach solutions that pleased the
LIRR as well as their riders.
