RIDERS ARE ALREADY GIVING RAVE REVIEWS TO THE NEW KAWASAKI R143
rapid transit subway cars. After an extremely successful 30-day test, Kawasaki Rail Car has begun delivering 212 cars for use in the B Division.

These standard-setting cars expand upon the advanced technological base established during the previous R142A program, to ensure that Kawasaki and New York City Transit together can continue to meet and exceed customer's demands for unprecedented comfort, safety and reliability. And the R143 cars are delivering.

Riders are commenting on the smoother, and quieter ride. Additional upgrades include sophisticated air bag suspension systems, extra insulation to reduce noise, clear recorded announcements, easy-to-read electronic message boards and extra ceiling handrails.

 

AMONG THE TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS INTRODUCED
in the R142A program, and carried into the R143 cars, are:

 

An advanced Monitoring and Diagnostics System which         provides a wide array of subsystem status and fault         information to operating or maintenance personnel via a CRT
        Train Operator's Display(TOD) located in each cab area. This         information ensures that faults that occur in service can be         quickly diagnosed and corrected.

An Automated Announcement System which provides         audio and visual information about route, destination and         next station, as well as door closing warnings.

A Passenger Emergency Intercom System that allows         two-way communication between passengers and crew         members in emergency situations.

Computer Network-Controlled Propulsion and Braking         Systems ensure consistent performance under all         conditions.

Lightweight bogie with air-spring secondary         suspension.

GROUND BREAKING NEW FEATURES
have also been added to the R143 cars including:

Provision for Communications-Based Train Control         (CBTC). When this system is online, it will be capable of         tracking the exact location of every train in the system,         enabling more frequent service by reducing the headway         necessary between trains.

An electronic LED Interior Information Sign System         that  is capable of providing media information, such as public         relations information, service announcements, advertising and         commercials.

The technology implemented in the R143 cars is elevating comfort and safety for riders, while ensuring greater efficiencies and trouble - free operation for transit systems. With them, Kawasaki Rail Car and New York City Transit are changing transportation in the city for the better.
